To Be A Patriot

The Patriotic Degree

On February 22, 1900, the first exemplification of the Fourth Degree was held in New York City.  To the three original principles of the Order: charity, unity and fraternity, the ritual added patriotism.  The focus of the Fourth Degree is on this principle- an abiding love for and devotion to one's country.  The primary purpose of the Fourth Degree is to foster the spirit of patriotism by promoting responsible citizenship and a love of and loyalty to the Knights' respective countries through active membership in local Fourth Degree groups called assemblies.

Starting at the Supreme level there is the Supreme Master and the Supreme Board of Directors.  The next level of the structure is broken into provinces of which there are twenty.  Each province is lead by a Vice-Supreme Master.  The province is then broken up into districts each of which contains a number of local Assemblies lead by a Navigator.  A Master is in charge of a District and usually has a District Marshal to assist him.

Certain members of the Fourth Degree serve as Color Guards and Honor Guards at civic and religious functions, an activity which has brought worldwide recognition to the Knights of Columbus organization.  Honor Guards have mastered the "Manual of the Sword".  The Master wears a Gold Cape and Chapeau while his District Marshal wears a green cape and chapeau.  The Navigator of an Assembly wears a White Cape and Chapeau while his Color Corps Commander wears a Purple Cape and Chapeau.  Finally, all other members of the Color Corps wear a Red Cape and White Chapeau.

As members of the Color Corps, we are the visible part of the Order.  When the public sees us in parades, they see the visible arm of "The Knights of Columbus".  When we attend wakes and/or funerals of our deceased brothers all see the visible "Knights of Columbus".  In the many parishes in which we serve, our fellow Catholics see "the Knights of Columbus".

Eligibility for Membership in the Fourth Degree

To be eligible to become a Fourth Degree member, you must be a Third Degree member in good standing, in the Knights of Columbus for one year, and you must be sponsored by a Sir Knight.

If you are interested in becoming a Fourth Degree Sir Knight, see your council representative or Grand Knight for a Form 4 Application and have a Sir Knight sponsor you and submit your Application to his Assembly.  Fourth Degree members must retain their membership as Third Degree members in the local council to remain in good standing.

SERVING THOSE WHO SERVED

(From www.kfc.org)

Our military personnel voluntarily act as the protectors of our nations, standing on the front lines while keeping us safe behind them. The Knights of Columbus acknowledges this unselfish act of patriotism by promoting the “Serving Those Who Served” program. There are 26 million U.S, veterans and hundreds of thousands of men and women currently serving in the military. Meeting the needs of such a large population is the Veterans Health Administration

(VHA) of the Department of Veterans Affairs, which operates more than 1,000 facilities throughout the United States, ranging from full- service hospitals to nursing homes and home-care programs.

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Veterans Affairs Voluntary Service (VAVS) Program is the vehicle that the Knights of Columbus uses in the Serving Those Who Served program. The Vice President for Fraternal Services has oversight of the VAVS program. The program is directed and managed by the Assistant for Military and Veterans Affairs who also serves as the National VAVS Representative to the VAVS National Advisory Committee (NAC). The KofC VAVS program is executed through the Fourth Degree chain of command through the U.S. Vice Supreme Masters and District Masters. Under the program, a Knight of Columbus is certified as a VAVS representative or deputy representative at a VA medical center.

Our certified representatives and deputy representatives attend hospital meetings and organize efforts for K of C volunteers. The Knights of Columbus currently has VAVS representatives at almost every VA medical center (VAMC) and many clinics in the United States. There is one certified representative and, up to, three deputy representatives from the Knights of Columbus at these VAMCs. Representatives recruit and manage K of C VAVS volunteers in developing activities and programs that target the most essential needs of the patients.

In the United States, the VA hospitals, clinics and facilities need all types of volunteer services – from program planning to visiting  veterans. For more information on this outstanding program, please contact your Fourth Degree district master, the Voluntary Service Chief at the nearest VA Medical center, or use this form.

The philosophy behind “Serving Those Who Served” is simple: the men and women of the Armed Forces didn’t let the Nation down on the battlefield, and the Knights of Columbus will not let these veterans down now.
