Bishop Verot Council #5845
The Knights of Columbus is a Catholic men's fraternal benefit society that was formed to render financial aid to members and their families. Mutual aid and assistance are offered to sick, disabled and needy members and their families. Social and intellectual fellowship is promoted among members and their families through educational, charitable, religious, social welfare, war relief and public relief works.
The history of the Order shows how the foresight of Father Michael J. McGivney, whose cause for sainthood is being investigated by the Vatican, brought about what has become the world's foremost Catholic fraternal benefit society. The Order has helped families obtain economic security and stability through its life insurance, annuity and long-term care programs, and has contributed time and energy worldwide to service in communities.
The Knights of Columbus has grown from several members in one council to more than 12,000 councils and 1.7 million members throughout the United States, Canada, the Philippines, Mexico, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Panama, the Bahamas, the Virgin Islands, Guatemala, Guam and Saipan.
Bishop Verot Council #5845 was begun by 62 gentlemen of Holy Name of Jesus Parish in 1966. Since that time, the membership has increased to over 160 members, and represents Holy Name of Jesus Parish, Immaculate Conception Parish, and Patrick AFB Catholic Community.
The Council’s fraternal year runs from July 1 through June 30, and starts off with the election and installation of officers at a ceremony held at Holy Name of Jesus Church.
Our activities are numerous, and predominantly are associated with fundraising in support of local charities.
We participate in a Handicapped Citizens Drive (Tootsie Roll) in the Spring of every year, with the total proceeds (normally in the $4,000 range), being distributed to local agencies who work with the mentally challenged citizens of Brevard County.
We holds Grand Knight’s Christmas Party each year, and four other social events, normally picnics, for Council members and their families.
We support an annual Spelling Bee, held at Holy Name of Jesus School each year, with the winner eligible for competition up through State level.
We operate an annual Basketball Throw contest for youngsters in our Parish area, with the winners in each category eligible to compete all the way to State level.
We participate in the “Life Chain” every year, normally in October, to show our support of Pro-Life groups and activities.
We directly support the KofC “Run For Life” operation as the runners pass through Brevard County on its way from Miami to St. Augustine each year. This major fundraiser supports Pro-Life agencies throughout Florida, and almost half of the average $10,000 raised each year comes from our local area.
We provide over $1,200 in financial support each year to the local Genesis House organization which provides housing for unwed and mistreated mothers.
We operate a food booth in the Holy Name of Jesus Beachside Festival each year, which provides approximately $4,000 in revenue to the Parish.
We schedule a Memorial Mass for our Departed Brother Knights in November of each year, which officiated by one of the Holy Name of Jesus priests, and attended by Council members, their families, and widows of deceased Brother Knights.
We operate an annual Christmas Tree Lot, which is the Council’s primary source of funding for all of its charitable endeavors.
We hold Corporate Communion gatherings about four times a year at Holy Name of Jesus Church, followed by breakfast in the local area.
We sponsor an Altar Servers Award, which is based on performance by all HNJ altar servers, written essays from them, and recommendations from the HNJ clergy. The monetary awards, normally $50.00 U.S. Savings Bonds are presented to the winners at a Sunday Mass.
