Recommended Reading List

It It is our intent to develop a share an optional "reading list" among our council’s brothers. Your recommendations need not be solely religious. Please feel free to submit your recommendations to our DGK, Aaron. The following are respectfully submitted to you for your consideration.

Editor's Note

While at Corporate Communion a discussion began about what the Knights of Columbus mandate is regarding Charities.  As a past State Regional Coordinator for KC Charities I mentioned that our three main charities are Vocations, Handicapped and Right To Life.  At the mention of the Right to Life I heard more than one person say they believe in the right to choose.

Barack Obama won 54% of the Catholic vote and it was well known that he was not only a right to life candidate but also a late term abortion advocate.

Brothers, one of the requirement to become a Knight is to be a Practical Catholic.  One cannot be a Practical Catholic and believe in the right to abortion.  Note we do not say "Practicing" but Practical.

There is a new crisis facing the Catholic Church and it is time to put on our armor as Knights and defend the Church. The following is a message from
Bishop Noonan:

Religious Freedom at Risk

Religious_Freedom_at_Risk_Homepage

On January 20th, the Department of Health and Human Services issued a stunning and extremely disappointing final rule mandating that contraception and sterilization be included at no cost to the insured in all health care plans. The very narrow religious exemption was unchanged from the interim final rule, only offering a year of "grace" to comply. The rule would go into effect for religious employers in August 2013 and employers' new policies would have to be implemented by January 2014. The purpose of the year is to allow us 'time to comply,' but in fact we have a year to reverse, repeal or change this unjust mandate.

The bishops along with Catholic partners including the Catholic Health Association, Catholic Relief Services, Catholic Charities USA, Association of Catholic Colleges and Universities and other Catholic and religious allies, had vigorously argued against the mandate and encouraged a broader exemption that would include religious institutions and ministries.

President of the USCCB, Cardinal-delegate Timothy Dolan commented, "Never before has the federal government forced individuals and organizations to go out into the marketplace and buy a product that violates their conscience. This shouldn't happen in a land where free exercise of religion ranks first in the Bill of Rights." USCCB statement on HHS Rule: http://www.usccb.org/news/2012/12-012.cfm

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ:

I write to you concerning an alarming and serious matter that negatively impacts the Church in the United States directly, and that strikes at the fundamental right to religious liberty for all citizens of any faith. The federal government, which claims to be "of, by, and for the people," has just dealt a heavy blow to almost a quarter of those people—the Catholic population—and to the millions more who are served by the Catholic faithful.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services announced last week that almost all employers, including Catholic employers, will be forced to offer their employees' health coverage that includes sterilization, abortion-inducing drugs, and contraception. Almost all health insurers will be forced to include those "services" in the health policies they write. And almost all individuals will be forced to buy that coverage as a part of their policies.

In so ruling, the Administration has cast aside the First Amendment to the Constitution of the United States, denying to Catholics our Nation's first and most fundamental freedom, that of religious liberty. And as a result, unless the rule is overturned, we Catholics will be compelled either to violate our consciences, or to drop health coverage for our employees (and suffer the penalties for doing so). The Administration's sole concession was to give our institutions one year to comply.

We cannot—we will not—comply with this unjust law. People of faith cannot be made second class citizens. We are already joined by our brothers and sisters of all faiths and many others of good will in this important effort to regain our religious freedom. Our parents and grandparents did not come to these shores to help build America's cities and towns, its infrastructure and institutions, its enterprise and culture, only to have their posterity stripped of their God given rights. In generations past, the Church has always been able to count on the faithful to stand up and protect her sacred rights and duties. I hope and trust she can count on this generation of Catholics to do the same. Our children and grandchildren deserve nothing less.

And therefore, I would ask of you two things. First, as a community of faith we must commit ourselves to prayer and fasting that wisdom and justice may prevail, and religious liberty may be restored. Without God, we can do nothing; with God, nothing is impossible. Second, I would also recommend visiting http://www.usccb.org/issues-and-action/religious-liberty/conscience-protection/index.cfm to learn more about this severe assault on religious liberty, and how to contact Congress in support of legislation that would reverse the Administration's decision.

Recommended Reading List

"My Imitation of Christ"

Written in the 15th century bya monk, Thomas a Kempis. For over 500 years it has been the most popular spiritual book, second only to the Sacred Scriptures. In it, the author presents the fundamental prin-ciples of the spiritual life. If you have never read it, you should! It is inspiring and a very easy read.

"The Last Things"

One of my favorite quotes is "Man proposes, but God disposes".Written by Rev. James Al-berione, SSP, STD. "In all your actions, remember your last end, and you will never sin." Remember, "I am a man des-tined for eternity!" The author presents the Last Things in avery understandable way – Death, The Particular Judgment, Purgatory, Heaven, Hell, and the General Judgment.

It is always in order to read, but it is very appropriate read-ing as we prepare for the month of November.
